Singapore Rail Corridor

Singapore, Asia

Overview

Singapore’s version of New York City’s High Line is fast becoming a reality, as the former Keretapi Tanah Melayu Railway Line transforms into a publicly accessible space.

Buchan’s strategic alliance partner Nikken Sekkei won the international competition to convert a 24-kilometre-long stretch of disused Singapore railway into a park that extends across the entire island. Buchan is developing the project’s graphics and wayfinding strategy.

Buchan’s strategy establishes seamless connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. The strategy is to create an inviting space for exploration and discovery. With its yellow and black colour palette, the wayfinding signage references the rustic character of the former railway and its identity as a green corridor.

Walkers, joggers and cyclists can engage with the wayfinding program. They can immediately identify what their location is, how many kilometres they’ve covered and distance to amenities and rest points. There is also interpretive signage along the path. This has more detailed information about art installations, adjacent facilities and botanical descriptions.

As well as being a diverse physical environment, the rail corridor has an immense spatial reach. It is a timeless legacy for Singapore given its ecologically sensitive environment.
